Numerous studies demonstrate what professor of psychology, Otto Whal, Ph.D. at George Mason University in Virginia stated at a conference sponsored by the Center for Mental health Services of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration. Speaking on the topic of discrimination and stigma, he stated “mental illness is a poor predictor of violence, ranking well after these factors: youth, male gender, hate violence, or poverty. Aside from people who abuse substances… 80 percent to 90 percent of people with mental illness never commit violent acts.”
